Kukurantumi Chief Defends Chiefs’ Role In Politics

The Paramount Chief of the Kukurantumi Traditional Area in the Eastern Region, Daasebre Boamah Darko II, has strongly defended his comments prior to the 2012 general elections, which sort to praise the NDC government, saying Chiefs have every right to be involved in politics, but not to be partisan.

Daasebre Boamah Darko II was criticized by a section of his citizens, when he showered praise on Regional Minister Victor Smith and the NDC administration, at a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi and the New Akyem Tafo ICT Center.

“I have no reservations in praising the current government because Abuakwa has seen many projects under their tenure, unlike some administration’s eight years in office which only saw the diversion of the Accra to Kumasi highway from Kyebi which has halted almost all economic activities in the area.

Daasebre said Traditional leaders should participate fully in policy and decision making in the country, especially those that will have direct impact on their areas, irrespective of the government in power.

He stressed the immense dedication and contributions of former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Acting Eastern Regional Minister, Ambassador Victor Smith and the NDC administration, in developing the Akyem Abuakwa area.

He further urged other traditional leaders to be bold and talk about developmental issues in their areas, adding that Chiefs must be there for their people always.
