The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has revealed that crime statistics indicate a drastic decline in criminal activities in the capital. In line with this achievement, the Command indicated that it would be more robust in 2015 to combat crime.
A total of 847 major crimes were recorded in 2014 as compared to 1085 cases in 2013; representing 21.93 per cent reduction rate. The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, maintained that the reduction in crime was as a result of various operational strategies adopted by the Regional Police Command in the course of the year.
Speaking to all divisional and district commanders under the regional command, he gave a breakdown of crime records in the region. He said the number of robbery cases came down from 255 in 2013 to 125 in 2014, whereas murder cases also reduced from 45 the previous year to 39 in 2014.
In the same vein, Rape incidents also dropped from 157 to 142. Defilement also dropped from 514 cases in 2013 to 142 in 2014. However, abduction increased from 114 in 3013 to 120 last year.
Mr. Yohunu maintained that Police visibility and accessibility would be expanded to reduce crime in 2015 and urged the general public to support the Police Service by volunteering requisite information to aid investigations and lead to the arrest of criminals.
“I urge the general public to partner the Police and to volunteer vital information because Policing is a shared responsibility”, he said.
