The Controller and Accountant General’s Department has issued a warning to all public workers who do not have Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) numbers on their pay slips.
This is in line with measures to get rid of ghost names from the Government payroll. This measure would commence in 2015 and all public officials who do not pay SSNIT contributions would have their salaries withheld. An estimated 650,000 ghost names are on the public payroll and this is causing huge financial losses to the state.
All public workers have up to March 2015 to update their records with the Department or have their salaries withheld. Mr. George Kofi Baah, Head of Payroll at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department confirmed to JoyNews that
“a series of interventions are being rolled out by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department”
He stressed that
“One of the interventions is to use the social security number as one of the mandatory checks in the payroll system”.
