“In every land, on every hand, it’s thoroughly agreed. The English language to explain is very hard indeed.” – Harry Hemsley
Forget the Ashanti’s with their ‘R’ and ‘L’ wahala. We all know the English language is sometimes tricky if care is not taken. Lots of words sound the same but have totally different meanings. Others are spelt in similar pattern but are pronounced very differently.
Take for example: P-U-T ‘put’, and B-U-T ‘but’.
Here are 9 words we constantly see being mixed up in Ghana. If you have others, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
1. Lose : The opposite of find || Loose : Not tight
If you use a single ‘o’ in ‘LOOSE, you are a loser!
2. Their: Signifies possession or belonging || They’re: A contraction for ‘they are’ || There: Signifies a location
There is their cow. Now that they’ve found it, they’re going to milk it!
3. Your: Signifies possession || You’re: A contraction for ‘you are’
Your spellings are so atrocious that you’re giving me plenti wahala!
