In Ghana, music producers come and become sort of like gods.
You hear their songs everywhere or maybe they produce that one big hit we can’t get out of our head, then all of a sudden POOF! Could it that they couldn’t outwit their competitors?
There are very few music producers who have consistently created music for our dancing feet and have not vanished from the limelight. Others have packed their bags and left.
Here is a list of Ghanaian music producers who once conquered the airwaves:
1. Goodies
Before his cocaine arrest in 2008, Goodies produced several hits for several Ghanaian acts including VIP, Mzbel, Lord Kenya, Tic Tac, Sydney, Nana Quame of ‘Odo Shock’ fame. Unfortunately his jail sentence meant he was out of here!
2. Roro
There was a time in Ghana when you couldn’t hear a song without ‘RoRo RoRo’ blasting in the background. Remember the Gyama days? Now he is nowhere to be seen.
3. Dr. Ray and Cash Two
The Haatso-based producer’s Dr Ray and Cash Two were one of the first music producers to go heavy on azonto beats. Remember Dr. Slim’s Seke? The duo worked with everyone from C-Zar, Tinny, Castro, Asamoah Gyan, DSP Kofi Sarpong and more surprise acts. In 2015, we haven’t heard much from them.
4. Jay Q
The glass breaker!! He is actually credited as the producer who introduced Gyama to hiplife. In 2003, Jay Q won the Ghana Music award for Best Sound Engineer in Ghana. He has kept us in the groove but has been silent for a while now especially since Azonto and Alkayida came and crushed the building.
5. Appietus
Appietus in the mix! Appietus is a legend in Ghana music no doubt, he is a guy who came and conquered like no other. You may not have been a fan of his music, but he managed to create his own space. Everyone from Lumba to Okyeame Kwame to Sarkodie, Appietus has had a hand in their success. In 2015 though, it appears he is not the go-to-producer anymore.
