The annual Ghana Music Awards, organised by Charterhouse, has been plagued by controversies, accusations and boycotts from the very beginning.

Some artistes for one reason or the other, have at a point criticised the awards or had issues with certain aspects of it. Even though some of these angry artistes came back and won awards at the event, some have stayed away from it for years.

Below are 10 Ghanaian artistes who have had issues with Ghana Music Awards at one point or the other.

1. Shatta Wale

We all know his issues. It started when he failed to win the Reggae/Dancehall artiste of the year at the 2013 Ghana Music Awards which went to Karkie. He went on to destroy stuff at the venue and released several songs to diss the organizers and the awards. He returned the next year to win and once again released songs to state that he didn’t need the awards. He’s currently in court with the event house after he released some videos deemed defamatory against the company.

2. R2Bees

R2Bees took on Charterhouse and the Ghana Music Awards after their song, Agyei was disqualified over some lyrics deemed sexually suggestive by the organizers for the 2012 Ghana Music Awards. They described the awards as a joke, fraudulent and not credible. Irony is that they came back to win big the next year.

 3. Kwaw Kese

Kwaw Kese took Charterhouse on after he failed to make the cut for the 2010 Ghana Music Awards. He described the awards as fishy and biased. According to him, members of the board are managers of artistes and they always want to push for their artistes to win. This came after he’s won big at the 2008 edition of the awards.

 4. Nicholas Omane Acheampong

He had an issue with the awards over his failure to make the cut for the Artiste of the Year category.  According to him, his song, Zaphanath Panea has a very high level of creativity and he performed on almost every big platform even more than secular artistes. Plus, also the fact that his Zaphanath Panea album which had sold over 70,000 copies, was not also nominated in the Album of the Year category.

5. Sarkodie

Charterhouse wanted him to perform but they couldn’t meet his demands, rumored to be GHc100,000. Unfortunately, Charterhouse had printed out posters and started radio adverts with his name as a performing artiste. He wasn’t too enthused and took on the event company. In his words, the company is taking musicians for granted.

7. Mzbel

In 2008, she requested not to be nominated for the awards. According to her, she was called to pick up a form and fill for her “E Dey Bee” song by the organizers but she told them she didn’t want to be part of the Awards. Her reason was that the same panel members that nominated her in 2008 are the same people who go on radio and television to criticize her for using sexually suggestive lyrics.

 8. Kwaisey Pee

He waded into the fight between Shatta Wale and Charterhouse. According to him, all Ghanaian artistes should rally behind Shatta Wale over the lawsuit filed against him by Charterhouse. He called for a total boycott of the awards by Ghanaian artistes until Charterhouse withdrew the lawsuit against Shatta Wale. He also previously requested not to be nominated for any Ghana Music Awards.

 9. Blakk Rasta

He had issues with the selection of songs for the awards. In 2010, he vowed not to attend the awards after the board nominated songs by Black Prophet which were released 4 years earlier. He felt the committee nominated songs on favoritism basis and not on merit. He told Charterhouse not to nominate him for any future awards.

10. Guru

After failing to win awards at the event on several occasions, Guru warned Charterhouse in 2014 that if he doesn’t get nominated and at the next awards, they should be ready for something much more than what Shatta Wale did.
