In our part of the world, women don’t really have much of a say in our society.
Most of the things are dominated by men and when a woman becomes loud, she receives all tags to her name.
But there are some few women who refuse to let sleeping dogs lie and will stand up for anything and are popularly known for being loud mouth. Most of these women stood for the rights of their kind and also lamented on things that affects the society but unfortunately their stance is usually not welcomed because they are seen as being controversial.
Though we might not appreciate what they say or do, we cannot ignore the fact that sometimes they speak the truth and because the truth hurts, we refuse to accept it. In other countries, they could have been hailed as heroes, but unfortunately in this part, they are under-appreciated and we feel we need to give them the due recognition, come with us…
1. Ursula Owusu Ekuful
The Ablekuma West constituency MP who is also a private legal practitioner, human rights advocate, gender activist, media analyst, among other things and once the past president of the Rotary Club is not your kind of woman you will want to mess with.
She’s stood in front of men to argue her way out of tough situations and has been labelled with all kinds of names. But what really makes her a heroine is her human rights advocacy and fighting for the good of others and also reaching to help the poor in her constituency but unfortunately her act is not recognized because she’s been labelled as being a loud mouth because she stands for the right.
2. Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings
The former first lady of the country is not the kind of woman you can walk over. From her time of being the first lady, she’s really been the backbone of her husband’s power and has stood against many odds to get the country this far.
Going through a coup and pushing the country onto it’s feet is not something small for a woman to handle side by side with her husband but they sailed through. She is even labelled as being the Iron Lady.
One achievement that was clearly linked to her was her strong association with the formation of the 31st Women’s Movement which sought to fight for the rights of women.
As a woman who is growing old and no more the first lady, you might assume she would have given up fighting for her people but she’s never stayed mute. She even went to the extent of even creating a whole new party because she feels the current government is swaying from the ideologies of the party that she and her husband helped built. On her facebook platform, you find her going against her husband’s party for doing the wrong thing. Well we might not like everything about her but we have to agree she’s a heroine who is under appreciated.
3. Yvonne Nelson
As an actress who is earning her money in filming making, you might assume things affecting the regular Ghanaian wouldn’t be a bother to her but interestingly she sees otherwise. In a rather unexpected campaign, she was able to single-handedly mobilize Ghanaians to demonstrate over “Dumsor”, a power crisis in the country termed as the “Dumsor Vigil”. This act generated a lot of insults from a section of some Ghanaians who mentioned her act is just to tarnish the image of the sitting government, but we all knew the effect “dumsor” is having on the people of the country.
Beside that she also fought against Glaucoma by bringing together her colleagues in the industry to create the awareness.
Hate her or love her, some of these things in a way has helped the country and in some countries, she could have been hailed as a hero but unfortunately in this part, she’s under appreciated.
4. Leila Djansi
Leila Djansi is a filmmaker, writer and producer whose movies has received international recognition but she’s also the type that can’t keep mute over things affecting the society and not only that, anything that affects the industry, she will not keep mute about it.
Over the past, she’s said a lot of things about Ghana movies that she hoped will help the industry grow but has been labelled as being controversial.
Though she initially campaigned for the current government to get in power, she is in recent times mentioned she is regretted campaigning for the government and cited a lot of reasons why.
We might not like her way of handling issues but to be frank, some of her utterances are misconstrued, because she meant good but we didn’t see it. She deserves to be a heroine but we seem to appreciate her effort.
5. Lydia Forson
Lydia has clearly shown to us that, there’s nothing that’s going on in this country that she wouldn’t add her voice to. From pastors comments to what the government says, whether good or bad she will add her voice to it and when it gets to fighting, she wouldn’t stand aside.
She has a blog that she writes her controversial articles on. Though we might not appreciate her “tantrums”, we have to agree she deserves to be a hero because some of her statements are actually true and deserves recognition.
6. Akua Blakofe
Akua Blakofe is a broadcaster who advocates for the use of natural hair and always preach against women who bleach their skin and wear wigs.
She is always talking about the adverse effects of using chemicals on your hair and the dangers of skin bleaching. This has created some kind of enmity between herself some of her own female media presenters but she still keeps fighting. Her course is a good one but because most of the women are addicted to the bad trend of wearing wigs and bleaching, she’s viewed with disdain.
We feel what she’s doing is great and hope some companies will even champion her course to stop women from the wearing of wigs and bleaching their skin, she’s a hero that needs to be celebrated but unfortunately she’s not.
