In honour of the late Minister of state for Labour and productivity, Barrister James Ocholi (SAN), we profile Nigerians who have lost their lives during active national service.
We all pledge to serve our Fatherland every time we sing the national anthem. But not many of us realise how much meaning accompany those words we flippantly say. Many Nigerians have paid the ultimate price in service to their Fatherland. We celebrate these unsung heroes of Nigeria:
1. James Ocholi
Nigeria lost the honourable Minister of State for Labour, James Ocholi, his wife and son to a ghastly accident along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway on March 6th.

2. Sam Okwaraji
Sam Okwaraji is a Nigerian lawyer and footballer who died playing for Nigeria against Angola. He slumped and died on the pitch during the world cup qualifier game.

3. Dr Dora Akunyili *
Former DG of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC); and former minister of Information, Dora Akunyili is one hero Nigeria will never forget in a hurry. Her work against fake drugs earned her several assassination attempts. Nigeria lost her in 2014 to cancer.

4. Nigerian Soldiers
The brave men and women of the Nigerian Army who put their lives on the line to protect this country are a set of unsung heroes.

5. Dr Ameyo Adadevoh
Dr Ameyo Adadevoh lost her life trying to prevent Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian, from spreading the dreaded Ebola virus in the busy metropolis of Lagos.

*Although Dr Akunyili died after service, her numerous contributions as DG of NAFDAC earns her a place on my heroes list.
