Growing up in Ghana, there were a lot of outdoor games that we played and didn’t see anything harmful or inappropriate with them.

Now we are adults and looking back, we realise there are some games we wouldn’t want our children to play because looking at it although most appeared innocent and less risky, a closer look might let you think otherwise.

Here are 10 of such games.

1. Alikoto

Alikoto was a nice game and we really enjoyed playing as kids. It involved getting a pen cap and inserting it into a round plastic battery cover that usually came with Tiger Head Batteries. What you do is to twist the Alikoto in a sand to make it whirl and when it’s about to topple, you skillfully knock it over such that it turns upside down. You will need a lot of dexterity to achieve this action. All this looks nice till it gets to the point where your opponent needs to hit the back of your hand with the Alikoto. This has resulted in injuries where the Alikoto cuts through the flesh of the opponent. This part is what makes it inappropriate. We sometimes use a snail’s shell so you can imagine the pain sometimes.

2. Aga Aga

This is a game where players come up with keywords and when they meet you they quickly ask you the keyword and if you fail to answer you must submit yourself for a knock on the head. This has resulted in a lot of injuries and sometimes fight when the person hits harder than expected. At the time it looked interesting but now looking back you realize it could have been more chaotic.

3. Sukule

Sukule can be considered as the most inappropriate games of all. Usually between friends, when you bend over or lean over something unaware your friend stuck his thumb in your anus so hard it makes you feel like visiting the loo. And this made others laugh at you and at the time we found it to be interesting but looking back you can clearly tell it was absolutely inappropriate

4. Antoakyere

This game, in particular, would have been fantastic had it not been for the part where you need to hit the back of a friend who is aware he’s the next in line and the song says it all, “Antoakyere, obi ba be wu” to wit “Antoakyere, somebody’s child is about to die”.

5. Blindfold

This is a game where friends blindfold you and you have to search till you can grab another friend then it’s their turn to be blindfolded to also search for another. It doesn’t seem to be harmful, but unfortunately, many children have hurt themselves in the process when especially you don’t know where you’re going. Children fall all the time and hurt themselves.

6. Tag Of War

The tag of war, just like blindfold, appear to be cool till when the other party intentionally lets go of the rope and you all fall over. In this game, nobody really prepares the ground for the game and so we might not be able to tell if there’s something dangerous on the ground.

7. Chaskele

Chaskele is a very interesting game we loved to play when we were kids and at the time, nobody saw anything wrong with it, but today looking back at it, you can tell we really posed a lot of risk to ourselves and others. Similar to baseball, you’re supposed to hit a mashed up can to enter a rubber tire while another player tries to prevent you from hitting your target. It looks normal till the can hits somebody in the eye or head, which happened many times when we played it. Sometimes not only does it hit somebody on the head or in the eye, it actually hit passing by cars, shattering their windscreen which had many parents paying for costs they never anticipated because we usually played it on the streets.

8. Maame Ne Paapa

We believe most of you know where this is leading to by now, right? This is a game where, children pretended to act out how their parents lived together as a family, and we know this is where most of you had your first sexual encounter. Knowing what most of you did, we know it is something you wouldn’t want any of your children to indulge in, right?

General-Mosquito

9. Aeroplane

With this game, we tied a piece of cloth around our waist and hold the end of the piece of the cloth and run when the wind is blowing hard. This forms something like a balloon while we run and the faster we run the larger the balloon. This was cool and very exercising but the dangerous thing about it is that you could fall and hurt yourself because your focus is more on the cloth than on yourself.

10. Rolling tires

This game was pretty simple, kids rolled used car tires with their bare hands. What makes it inappropriate is that, sometimes lose wires in the tire could hurt the kids.

11. Asongoli (Kite)

The Asongoli is like our drone at the time, we could control it till it gets to the highest peak in the skies but the problem is many ended up getting stuck on electric cables causing a lot of damages.

12. Bongrace

With this game, kids made a scooter which can be sat on, the kids then push in turns. This game could bring serious injuries if the hand ends up in the moving parts of the scooter.
