MPESA is arguably the heartbeat of the 254. Millions of transactions are conducted daily through the mobile money-sharing service.
There is one bit of MPESA etiquette that is unwritten but nationally agreed upon by all Kenyans too. When someone sends you some dough, you expect them to include the withdrawal fee on top so that you don’t have to cut into your exact sum while getting the cash from an MPESA agent. Simple as that. Unfortunately, some people never see the need to do this. They just send the exact amount and piss you off monumentally.
In fact, here are the thoughts that are most likely to run through your mind when you open that MPESA message and see that exact figure.
1. “What a broke person”
Sometimes you can’t help but come up with this as the only solid reason why the human being in question sent you the exact amount of money you wanted. The only reason why someone would feel so bad about parting with any amount from 27 bob to 100 bob is because they are operating on limited finances right?

2. “Kwani huyu ni mchoyo aje?”
This thought is mostly reserved for ladies. If you are a guy and you have a habit of sending ladies money without including the 27 bob on top, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. You’ll be portrayed as mean even if you sent 20K. Just play it safe and include that withdrawal amount.
3. “Ni sawa tu! At least ametuma.”
Then there are times you are just glad you got the amount. This is a feeling you get when the person in question owed you money or they are just doing you a favor. Another person wouldn’t have sent at all so you have no option but to be happy and grateful you got the money.

4. “Huyu siezi fanya biz na yeye tena”
We’ve all been tempted to cut ties with people who don’t realize how much we value our amounts in full. Getting MPESA without ‘Pesa Ya Kutoa’ is like getting your salary minus ten shillings. It’s still a big deal.
5. “Ama alisahau?”
There’s that time it comes as so much of a shock that you convince yourself that the person didn’t mean to do that. Maybe they just forgot. Actually, they didn’t. They knew what they were doing. Too bad.
6. “Nkt!!!”
Sometimes you don’t even know what to think. You simply get angry, let out an ‘nkt’ sound and pray that the person turns into a pillar of salt like Lot’s wife in the bible so you can sell it and get your ‘pesa ya kutoa’.

7. “Pia mimi nitamtumia tu hivyo next time”
There’s nothing sweeter than vengeance. Repeat…there is nothing sweeter than vengeance. Make sure you are far away from your pastor while saying this. If the offender you have frequent dealings with, you plan to revenge. They’ve got to feel how bad it is too. So whenever you have the chance to send them money, you even deduct more than a hundred bob from it.
