Anyone who grew up in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s will tell you what a big deal Safari Rallies were in Kenya and East Africa as a whole.
It was the one thing that united us all, young old, Kenyans, Asians, Brits one thing was evident: The love for the rally, and boy did people turn up, bets in hand, spirits at heart all ready to have a damn good time.
Between 1953 and now, but especially in the glory years of the 70s and 80s, every leading car manufacturer had sights on Kenya . Not only that: the heavyweights of the world rally circuits made Kenya their part time home.
The true Safari was always an endurance event, covering vast distances, and not a sprint race.
It felt exceedingly good to be the centre of so much world focus for an intense four days for all the right reasons.
