We bet Christmas was one of your favourite times of the year when you were little.

Before adulting and all the wahala of trying to make a living and do something with your life started, Christmas was really the season to be jolly.  There were so many activities and every child actively looked forward to Christmas day. Here are some of the things that made Christmas really awesome.

1. Holiday

There was usually no school, which meant no assignments or waking up super early. It also meant that we got to spend those days doing whatever we wanted, after doing the house chores of course.

2. Fireworks aka Banger

Throwing these and disturbing the whole neighbourhood was definitely a highlight of Christmas.

3. Getting new clothes and shoes

This is probably the most common best childhood Christmas memory for most people. There were always clothes and shoes that were specially bought for Christmas. We usually turned up on Christmas day looking all fly with our plastic sunglasses.

4. Making new hairstyles

The girls usually got elaborate hairstyles done for Christmas and looked extra special.

5. Visiting Santa a.k.a Father Christmas

We got to receive packs of gifts, sit on Father Christmas’ laps and take pictures.

6. Gifts

Kids from really posh families got new toys during Christmas, and everyone else was jealous of them.

7. Money from visitors

Visitors always gave the kids a little ‘something’ for Christmas, parents usually collected it to ‘keep’ though.

8. Christmas Parties

Huge Christmas parties were thrown for the kids, and we got to meet new people, eat candy floss, see father Christmas and give our requests/shoutouts, sometimes on tv.

9. Food

The best part of Christmas was the food and all the special delicacies. Most of us were usually like this:

10. Spending time with Family

The whole family usually came together to celebrate Christmas and seeing cousins and family members that you hadn’t seen in a while was the best thing.
