Dedan Kimathi is one of Kenya’s most adored independence heroes.
But very little is known about his family life. Kimathi was married to Mukami Kimathi. Among their children were sons Wachiuri and Maina and daughters Nyawira and Wanjugu.
In 2009, the Kibaki government constructed a three-bedroomed house for Mukami at her farm in Kinangop, Nyandarua County since she had been living in poverty. They also provided her with a double cabin pickup for private use in 2012.

In 2010, Kimathi’s widow requested that the search for her husband’s body be renewed so she could give him a proper burial. Unfortunately, that hasn’t bore fruit.
Luckily, a rare photo of Dedan Kimathi and his brother Wambararia has emerged. The photo was left outside a British army camp in 1953 as the search for him continued.
Check out the photo.
