Buchi Emecheta is a renowned Nigerian author.
Sadly, she passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, the 25th of January 2017 in London. During her lifetime she wrote many brilliant books that touched on very important issues. Here are some of our favourites.
1. The Joys of Motherhood- 1979
This novel explores the how having children elevates a woman’s status in Nigeria. It tells the tragic story of Nnu-Ego, daughter of Nwokocha Agbadi and Ona, who had a bad fate with childbearing.

2. Second Class Citizen- 1974
Second Class Citizen is about the struggleAdah (the main character) faces with survival, as a woman not only of while switching from a high-class position in her native Nigeria to a very poor class in a predominantly white European society.

3. The Bride Price- 1976
This is the story of Akunna Odia, an unmarried teenage girl whose father is dead. It chronicles how Akunna fights against being sold off for a bride price without furthering her education.

4. The Slave Girl- 1977
This is the story of Ogbanje Ojebeta, a girl sold off by her very own blood into slavery to the house of Ma Palagada and husband.

5. Head Above Water – 1986
This is a non-fiction biography that tells how Buchi suffered domestic abuse from her husband when she was 22 and had five children, and what she eventually did to survive.

6. In The Ditch- 1972
This book is about a young, lone Nigerian mother’s determination to carve a place for herself in England against the odds.
