Vijai Kumari was pregnant when she was convicted of murder 19 years ago — wrongfully, according to her. She didn’t have the $180 to post bail, and her husband abandoned her. She went to jail and gave birth four months later to her son Kanhaiya. “I thought I’d die in prison … [so] I sent him away when he got a bit older,” she says. All she had was a passport-size photo of him and visits once every three months. Kanhaiya went to work at a garment factory when he turned 18 and saved up for a lawyer; earlier this month, his mother was freed. “He’s all I have in this world,” Vijai says of her son and their heartwarming reunion.
