Last week’s acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin has spurred heated controversy, and President Obama weighed in on the case today in an unannounced press conference at the White House. “Trayvon Martin could have been me,” he said, recalling his own prepresidential encounters with racial profiling that included women guarding their purses and individuals locking car doors as he passed by. The president stated that African-Americans filter the case through “a set of experiences and a history that doesn’t go away,” adding that “on this long and difficult journey we are becoming a more perfect union. Not a perfect union, but a more perfect union.” [Source]
