[OMG!Ghana] Reports by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) indicate that government is yet to respond to their concerns two weeks after they threatened to embark on a strike.
The National Vice President of UTAG, Kakraba Bakubo, on citi news bemoaned what he described as government’s complete disrespect for them and other labour unions in the country.
According to him, The only response the association has so far received according to him “is from the National Labour Commission directing UTAG and government to sit down and resolve the issue.
“I think the ball is in government’s court and therefore government should take the initiative.”
He stated that UTAG in the next eight days will convene a national executive council meeting to determine their next move.
Mr. Bakubo mentioned that UTAG members are in no way “worried and this has been government’s position all the time; a complete disrespect to unions and associations. It’s nothing new. We are only waiting for the deadline that we gave and we are going to respond appropriately.”
He however warned that next semester’s academic activities will be affected if government fails to meet their demands.
“The students have not come to school yet so if we declare any strike action, we declare even before the students travel back to the various universities. Consequently, they will even know that they don’t have to come to their campuses because UTAG is on strike.”
