Opinion: Stop killing the Ghana Movie Awards

$

Majid MichelOfficially, the Ghana Movie Awards which is held annually will be four years on December 30. As usual, winners for this year’s edition would be announced, rewarded and celebrated at the Accra International Conference Centre, the venue for the awards.

As actors, producers, directors, Ghanaians and other stakeholders gear up for this year’s edition, a lot of questions have been asked and are still being asked with regards especially on preparation for this year’s event which many on the quiet side have described as not being good.

A lot is also being asked about how serious the awards should be taken. Questions are being asked about the credibility of the awards and whether it is living up to its expectations.

All these questions are being asked because of the happenings that took place few days to the grand announcement of this year’s nominations.

As has been the case over the past three years of the awards, a special ceremony is held for the announcement of the final list of the nominees for the awards.

This year was no different. A well planned soiree had been put together for announcement to be made to the Ghanaian media. Media personnel were in anticipation of who the nominees to be unveiled were but the nominations were shamefully leaked by someone among the organisers.

The leakage consequently defeated the purpose for the well-organised-soiree for the media.

Since its inception the Ghana Movie Awards has been bedeviled with one problem or the other. The problems, over the years have however not been solved. Yet problems continue to pour in. In fact, some of the mistakes shouldn’t have come up in the first place. They were avoidable.

But the anomalies keep showing their ugly head year after year. If organisers of the awards will leak information before their scheduled release, it shows the direction the awards is pointing and why people are doubting its credibility.

Surely, for several years to come the Ghana Movie Awards would want to be mentioned and seen as one of the most credible award schemes for movie personalities in Ghana.

Yet there are several errors that keep occurring and which have not been dealt with. It is amazing how new sets of problems are deliberately added to the already existing ones.

Existing problems

In the first edition, there were four actresses who were adjudged by the awards’ jury panel as befitting of the Best Actress award because of the role each of them played in Alhaji Salam Mumuni’s movie 4Play Reloaded.

The four actresses, namely, Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Okoro, Juliet Ibrahim and Roselyn Ngissah were presented with one of the biggest awards on the night. They won Best Actress in a Lead Role and were consequently given one SUV car to share among themselves, aside the statuettes that were presented to them on the night.

To give a car to someone for becoming Best Actress is not a bad idea, but it turned out wrongly because four people were given the nod and therefore had to share one car. This created tension, pressure, hatred and enmity among the actresses involved.

Awards are supposed to unify and bring people in a particular field together. However, words on the streets indicate that the Ghana Movie Awards is doing otherwise.

Up until now, Ghanaians do not know the whereabouts of the said car. We do not know whether it has been sold and the money shared or if it is packed in the garage of one of the actresses or being used by someone else. Shouldn’t answers be given before new sets of problems are introduced?

Was The Leakage Necessary?

Another thing that when continued will kill the awards concerns the leakage of information before it officially comes out. Was the leakage of the nominees for awards before they were unveiled necessary at all?

What purpose does it serve? Copying other awards schemes to help you grow yours is normal practice but must it be done with disdain?

A week before the nominations for Oscars, the Oscar website leaked vital information which had to do with the nomination of Quentin Tarantino’s epic adventure film Django Unchained.

I stand to be corrected, but before that leakage, I had not heard or read about leakage concerning nominations before they were made officially public. That is why I believe the idea of leaking information from the Ghana Movie Awards before its grand release was ‘stolen’ from the Oscars.

And why must it be so?

Even before the leakage of that information, many still found it difficult to see the awards as being credible. Now after the leakage, we can all predict what will be happening in coming years.

Awards events are organised by human beings. What this means is that people are always privy to some information, but it does not mean such information which sometimes are vital should be leaked? Charter House has organised the annual Ghana Music Awards for 14 years and there has not been any leakage of information particularly concerning nominations before they are officially released?

How can counterparts in foreign movie awards schemes which have been held close to a decade or more, respect and see the awards as serious and credible? Must we joke with everything because we are in charge?

Preparation for this year’s awards has been poor and it has not been perfect in the previous years either. CEO of the awards scheme, Phred Nuamah must know that the Ghana Movie Awards like any awards event needs a serious and dedicated team to make the awards triumph.

A team to organise the event must be put in place long before any scheduled ceremony. In fact, there should be a team that is supposed to function all round the year.

It is important that awards ceremonies are taken as serious events, and as such standards ought to be upheld. Faltering every year as well as delays with the process are not helping the scheme. The movie industry is a vibrant and serious one that needs serious minds to organise and implement to the satisfaction of the industry players.

I bet Phred is not waiting for the time when players in the industry will boycott the awards because things have not been done correctly. Merry Christmas to you all!

The right-back has returned to the country to spend the Christmas and New Year festivities with his family after getting his club career back on track in South Africa with Santos.

The ex Fulham defender stood in shock as the space being occupied by his Infiniti JX35 2013 model valued at $45,000 laid empty on Christmas day.

The Ghana international has since made an official report to the Police to begin investigations towards the retrieval of the vehicle.

Paintsil had started playing again after putting a difficult summer behind him.

MUST-READ: Kelvin And His Homeproud Crew Think Some Gh Bloggers Are Fools!

As Nydj concluded his review on the ’24th Nite’ concert’ by saying “A feeling is better expressed than narrated by a second party and as a result, I wouldn’t want to talk about press accreditation and the challenges some of my colleagues had to go through as I know most of them would write about it themselves.”, I know he was calling on me to write my experience so I come to give me detailed accounts of my sad encounter with Homeproud after wasting my time to help promote their show.

I don’t even know how to start this sad encounter I had with Mr Kelvin and his Homeproud crew because there are lots to be written but let me try and summarize things. I run away from school on Monday to Kumasi just to attend 24th Night with Kwabena Kwabena, Sarkodie, Fuse ODG and 2face (who was absent) and get some pics for readers of my blog and OMG!Ghana but unfortunately, I didn’t get an accreditation when I got to Kumasi after calling Mr Kelvin on Sunday to inform him of my coming to Kumasi and my accreditation. Now let’s go to how they all started.

Weeks after Kwbana Kwabena hosted his charity concert at the State Banquette Hall in Accra, Mr Kelvin, CEO of Homeproud contacted me asking of Ghanaian and Nigerian artistes who can fill the Kumasi Sports Stadium this Christmas. Talks started from then till he later told me that 2face and Kwbane Kwabena have been sealed for the ‘24th Nite’ concert in Kumasi. I started with my usual story writing to promote the concert since it’s a Kumasi ‘thing’. Mr Kelvin could wake me up around 5 am and even call me during lecture hours to give me info to write about the concert all in the name of helping to promote their show.

Not only do I know Mr Kelvin because of Homeproud, he is also part of Kwbana Kwabena’s management so you can now tell why I post most of Kwabena Kkwabena’s news.

Weeks before the main concert, Mr. Kelvin called to ask if I will make it to the event but I told him i won’t be able to because my revision and exams timetable were not out as at the time he called to ask. After I saw my timetable and realized my revision starts from Saturday December 28 around 4:30 pm, I thought I could go to Kumasi for the 24th Night concert and the Kumawood awards happening on Friday December 27 and return early Saturday morning to start  my revision. I called Kelvin on Sunday December 22 and informed him about my traveling to Kumasi for the show and asked if I will get accreditation because I can’t travel to Kumasi without getting a ‘pass’ to the show. Mr Kelvin assured me of accreditation and told me to come because there was no way I could be denied one for all my help towards the event.

I arrived in Kumasi around 9:30 pm on Monday so I hurriedly went to bed without calling anyone to know of my arrival in the city. I called Mr Kelvin early Tuesday morning but he didn’t pick any of my calls. I sent him a text informing him of my arrival and my accreditation. He later called to tell me he didn’t have MTN number but my Airtel that is why he didn’t pick my call. I was a little bit surprised because he whatsapped me the concert’s poster on the MTN line so why this story? Probably he had changed his phone or any other reason. He gave me one guy who is also part of the Homeproud crew to contact for my accreditation so I did exactly that. I wanted two for my camera man and myself but the guy said Kelvin has to give him that order so I should call Kelvin to tell him that but several calls placed to Kelvin were not answered so I accepted the one accreditation and asked of the time and where I will get it. The guy told me to be at Royal Lamerta Hotel, venue for the show around 1pm because he will be available there at that time.

Several calls placed to the guy around 1:30 pm were not answered so I decided to go to Lamerta because Kelvin would be around and that will even be easier for me. Fortunately for me, Kelvin was the first person I saw on my arrival at the hotel. I told him the guy has not been picking my calls but he asked me to come for the accreditation around 1pm. Kelvin asked me to wait for him whilst he searches for the guy. After several minutes of waiting, he told me that the guy is also not picking his calls. He later told me that a guy in white who just passed by me is the one giving out the accreditation and asked if I didn’t see him. How will I know someone who is giving an accreditation when I’ve not met the person before and again why didn’t he collect it from the guy for me? I saw him walking with the same guy approaching me but surprisingly, the guy never reached where I was standing. Kelvin came without the guy. For all those while, I was busily snapping pictures of Fuse ODG and the preparation of the venue posting them on facebook and instagram for people to know how far things had gone.

After waiting for over an hour and half, I told Kelvin I was leaving and he said ‘ok we shall meet in the evening’. How do we meet in the evening when you gave me nothing? I bought my ticket at the gate to enter the show because I had already gone for a camera and there was no way I can miss the show since I travelled all the way from Accra to Kumasi for that purpose. Luckily for me, the guy whom I called in the morning approached me and asked of how I entered and I told him I bought a ticket to enter. The guy who even approached me that night is totally different from the one Kelvin said was in white when I went there in the afternoon. I approached Kelvin and told him how he disappointed me but before he could say jack, someone else was also complain of another thing.

After the concert, I approached one guy called Kobia who is also a member of the Homeproud team to lodge a complain but he said I should give him a minute he will attend to me but never did he see me t listen to what I had to tell him. He passed by me twice but never attended to me as he said. I complained to this same Kobia guy in the afternoon on facebook about not getting an accreditation but the only thing he could ask was ‘where are you” and after replying him, he said nothing again. Kobia who has been following my updates thanked me days before the concert on facebook for my immense support for their show so why this treatment from them.

So now you see how SOME Kumasi event organizers can behave? Instead of learning for my revision and exams or better still stay in Accra and attend the December to Remember or Kojo Antwi’s concert, I left all my radio shows to Kumasi for a show which the CEO of the production house has always been complaining of Kumasi people not supporting their own.

loudThe aging grudge between Ghana’s top dancehall artistes, Bandana aka Shatta Wale and Samini was again felt at the Loud In GH concert organized by Yfm at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Concert which headlined top dancehall artistes in the country had Samini and Shatta Wale on the bill, but to the surprise of many, Shatta Wale refused to stop performing after he had performed close to 30 songs knowing Samini was next to perform.Several times he was signaled to end his performance but he chose to caution the organizers to allow him do his job which is to entertain his fans while the crowd kept on chanting his name. He was allowed to perform and he never stopped.

His attitude compelled the organizers to pull the plug on the PA system which Shatta Wale regardless kept on performing to the chant of his fans for some minutes before he gave up the stage.

The audience started leaving after Shatta Wale left the stage at around 0345 GMT thinking the show was over. As soon as Samini was introduced, many of the people who had left started returning to the stadium wondering what had just happened.

About half the audience had left and Samini ignited a huge cheer from those present when he insisted on performing to those who are ready to be entertained even if it would last till sunrise.

He delivered a great performance to the satisfaction of his fans despite the unnecessary delay he had to encounter. The concert had performances from eight underground dancehall artistes with Kaakie, Natural Face, Jupiter, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale and Samini entertaining the crowd that had filled a quarter of the stadium stands.

I don’t hate Sonnie Badu – Omani Acheampong

SonniebababaduGospel singer Nicholas Omane Acheampong of ‘Maher-shalal-Hash-baz’ fame says he has nothing against his colleague musician, Sonnie Badu.

“I don’t know where this is coming from but I want to put it on record that I have nothing against Sonnie Badu. I don’t hate him. I don’t have any grudge [against] him. All I did was to advice his handlers to find a way of ending this back and forth over a tape bearing his voice and his denial. This harmless advice has been taken by some people to mean something else,” Omani Acheampong told NEWS-ONE.

Nicholas was recently asked his opinion on comments from Sonnie Badu that most of the songs from Ghanaian gospel musicians neither made sense nor glorified God.

Though Sonnie held a press conference to deny ever making such statements, an audio recording of his voice making the exact statement has gone viral and raised questions about his truthfulness.

Nicholas, in his comments, said the back and forth between Sonnie and the media was not helping the image of the musician and that of the gospel music fraternity in general and therefore his management should find a way of putting a stop to it.

He also disagreed with Sonnie that gospel songs from Nigeria generally had better lyrics and rhythm.

“I have vowed not to have a problem with any man of God or any gospel musician because of my pastor, Prophet Emmanuel Badu Kobi, head pastor of Glorious Wave Church.”

“I am focusing on my music career and moving from one congregation to another, ministering to God’s people through my music. That is my focus, but not to get involved in a debate over Sonnie Badu. I was asked my opinion on what he said and I answered. I did not condemn or attack anyone,” Nicholas explained.

Justin Bieber has announced for the second time that he is to retire from the music industry at the ripe old age of 19 – and this time it’s ‘official’.

The multi-platinum selling singer took to Twitter to break the news to his 47 million followers on Christmas Eve, in a tweet that said: “My beloved beliebers I’m officially retiring.”

His 4am tweets then continued with the contradictory statement that he would be here “forever”. He wrote: “The media talks a lot about me. They make a up a lot of lies and want me to fail but I’m never leaving you, being a belieber is a lifestyle… Be kind loving [sic] to each other, forgive each other as god forgave us through Christ Merry Christmas IM HERE FOREVER”.

He first suggested he would be quitting the industry during an interview with Power 106 FM, where he told host Kurt Alexander in Los Angeles: “Um, I’m actually retiring man”.  He added: “I want to grow as an artist, and I’m taking a step out, I want my music to mature.”

However, his manager Scooter Braun later dismissed the singer’s remarks and confirmed that he will not be retiring after all. “Next year he’s taking a break just to make music and relax, take some time for himself for the first time since he was 12,” Braun told ITN at the premiere for his new movie Believe.

The Twittersphere exploded with the news as Bieber’s panic-stricken fanbase – the dedicated ‘Beliebers’ -posted frantic messages of shock, worry and teenage heartbreak.

Bieber hit international stardom when he was scouted through YouTube videos in 2007.

The Headies 2013 which held last night in Lagos saw Nigerian rapper Olamide turn out the biggest winner walking away with the highest number of awards.

The Yoruba-lingo rapper picked up three awards: His ‘Durosoke‘ single won ‘Best Street-Hop Artiste‘ award while his second album ‘YBNL‘ won not only the ‘Best Rap Album‘ (beating the likes of Illbliss, Vector and Reminisce) but also won the ‘Best Album of the Year‘ award.
