Male fashion trends are no stranger to controversy … Let’s talk about the mandal…yes, the male sandal.
In 2011 when Burberry Prorsum launched the male gladiator sandal for their spring summer collection, blogs and fashion enthusiasts gave their two cents from calling the trend ‘the mandal horror’ to ‘gladiator sandals for men…yuck’ to every other adjective that can be used to suggest that a trend is atrocious. Other men however, loved the trend and went on to rock them sandals like the true fashionistas they are!
As with every fashion trend, there’s the rise and fall cycle…that said, the gladiator sandal for men is back as seen in the Balmain 2016 Spring collection.
Here is how African men are wearing the gladiator sandal:
1. Nigerian Fashion Designer, Papa Omisore shows us how he rocks his gladiator sandals
2. He killed it on this one …
3. He proves that men can also wear knee length gladiator sandals with shorts…more so, that they can go for vibrant colors. Bold!!!
4. Here, he goes for a more subtle gladiator sandal which screams ‘comfy stylish weekend look’
5. Patoranking’s all white ensemble on the other hand looks busy and all over the place
6. We love this summer-y look of a sheer shirt paired with slouchy pants and gladiator sandals. Hmm quite balls-y!
7. The shorts and knee length gladiator sandals seems to be more common …
8. This guy went for the knee length sandals and shorts too
What we can learn from these men:
1. Never wear your gladiator sandals with socks
2. Pair your sandals with either shorts, very fitting pants or carrot pants/joggers/harem pants.
Here comes the debate. Gladiator sandals for men; yay or nay?
