The city of Lagos has such rich history.

If you look really hard, you’d find out that there’s a story behind everything in Lagos. From the amazing colonial buildings to the names of popular streets in Lagos Island, everything has a story.

Twitter User @Uncle_Kae who is very passionate about the Nigeria. He did some research on the history behind the names of popular streets on Lagos Island. And we decided to share them with you.


1. Bourdillon Avenue

Bourdillon avenue (home to Jagaban) is named after the former colonial administrator of Nigeria, Sir Bernard Bourdillon (1935-1943).

2. Osborne Road

Osborne Road is named after the first Chief Justice of Southern Nigeria, Willoughby Osborne (1906-1913).

3. Campbell street

Campbell street is named after Robert Campbell a Jamaican-born businessman who settled in Lagos in 1860 & established the Anglo-African newspaper. Robert Campbell lived near where Holy Cross Cathedral is located today.

4. Forsythe street

Forsythe street is named after a colonial administrator named Charles Forsythe who helped establish English legal institutions in Lagos. Charles Forsythe also helped set up the colonial administration in Lagos in 1862. He was the son of a European man and Sierra Leonian woman.

5. Glover road

Glover road is named after Captain John Glover, the man who set up the forerunner of the Nigerian army and police with 10 Hausa men in 1863.

6. Milverton Road

Milverton Road is named after Baron Milverton (Arthur Richards) Governor General of Nigeria 1943-48.

7. Simpson street

Simpson street is named after one of the first heads of customs, W.H. Simpson.

8. Reeve road

Reeve Road is named after the former Governor of Lagos, Henry Reeve (1902-1904).

9. Moloney street

Moloney street near Marina is named after Cornelius Moloney, Governor of Lagos from 1886-1891.
