A child in the 1980s went through some sort of hardships that children born after 2000 would never understand.
Here are some of them:
1. There was only one TV Station KBC and it came on at 4.00 PM with the national anthem being played and it ended at 12.00 pm.
2. You were not allowed to eat at the neighbors’ house and if you did you would receive a beating from your parents.

3. We had the best sweets like goodie goodies, toffee, ice candy, Koo and cigarettes sweets which have now disappeared.

4. We had the best games,
shake, kalongo, rounders, kati, hide and seek, snakes and ladders, adventures where we would go exploring and go swimming in the rivers. The rivers weren’t as polluted as they are now.

5. We listened to radio most of the time and had cassettes to tape certain songs.
We would write down lyrics in books so that we could cram them. The worst thing that would happen was when your parent’s tapes got chewed.

6. Christmas was the biggest holiday of the year.
The time when you would get new clothes made by the tailor and you would probably wear identical clothes with your siblings. Happy times.

7. Having the photographer come to your house was a big deal.
You would make sure you were looking your best because there was no opportunities to retake the photos.

8. We would iron our hair because we needed straight hair and we couldn’t afford to go to the salon and get a blow dry.
Another alternative was the good old hot comb which was so efficient at straightening hair.

9. Kids of nowadays don’t know how lucky they are to play video games.
We had basic games like brick, Supa Mario, King Kong and other games that we had to share.

10. Forget MTV, URTNA was the biggest music show in Africa. It featured all the major musicians.

11. Most people didn’t have phones at home…
so you had to go to the call box to make a call and wait for the person to be called from their home to come and answer the call.

12. We had to build our own toys from cartons; milk cartons, and tin cans.

13. We didn’t have drones but we would tie the leg of a beetle to a string and watch the beetle fly around and then spin it around.

14. The Safari Rally was the biggest event of the year.
It was a family outing to go and watch the cars at the various stages of the rally.
