Queens Of The Fro: Naija Female Celebs Rocking The Hairstyle

The afro is one hairstyle that has been around for ages.

Afro (aka Fro) is a natural hairstyle worn mainly by African-Americans in the 1950s and onwards. The Afro was worn by many blacks who wanted to reclaim the beauty and pride of their race. Although many were ridiculed and discriminated against, the hairstyle came to stay.

One of the easiest way to get a “Fro” is to comb our your natural kinky black hair to its full length. Then work on it some more to create a halo. The comb used to make an Afro is called an Afro Pick.

With the recent natural hair craze sweeping across the nation, almost everyone is rocking the afro. Did you know some celebs already rocked the “fro” before it became this common placed?

Here are my favourite Nigerian Fro Queens:

Gospel musician Sonnie Badu agrees with movie producer Leila Djansi who thinks actor Abraham Attah should be relocated to America else “his career cannot be sustained in Ghana”.

The gospel musician in an Instagram post early Tuesday morning said he supports the movie-maker for his comments on Facebook on Monday which suggested that Cary Fukunaga, director for Abraham Attah’s breakthrough movie, ‘Beasts Of No Nation’ to relocate the Dansoman boy to America.

Sonnie Badu in his post said the pull him down syndrome in the country will hinder the progress of the actor should he stay in Ghana.

I agree with this lady .. #RelocateAbrahamAttah otherwise they will ……………. With their PHD pull him down.. Now how can you sit on radio and say he has done nothing and that he can’t speak good English ? Well let me tell you , one of the major reasons why they picked him was because of that very accent , the day he looses that , he will be out of job.. My to my fellow Ghanaians let’s learn to celebrate our heroes , I will tell oh this for free Nigerians will never sit on the radio and condemn someone who has made it to the oscars and as such brought honor to the country they will actually award him .. God has blessed Ghana so much but hmmmm our people will celebrate others and leave their own .. but don’t worry we are the change !!

We can all agree that Matatu’s have come a long way , and has evolved into a pop culture of it’s own. We see them on our roads and we admire it’s beauty, but this particular Matatu dubbed “Casino Sn3 Joker” takes the cake.

As the name implies, Casino Sn3 Joker is modeled after one of the highest grossing movies of all time, Christopher Nolan’s 2008 the Dark Knight.

Everything You Need To Know About Kenya Certificate Of Secondary Education Exam Results

KCSE results will be released amid fears that lost time during teachers strike in September 2015 could slump performance of candidates.

Ranking of candidates and schools will not be done as it was abolished to deter learners from using unorthodox means to pass the tests.

Some 525,802 students who wrote the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam will know their results on Thursday March 3, 2016.

The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) Chief Executive Officer Joseph Kivilu has revealed that the results will be released while keeping with the tradition of no ranking of candidates or schools.

“There will only be comparisons of performance in terms of gender, subjects and other important aspects of the national exam,” says Kivilu.

He noted that candidates who wish to know their results immediately could send their index number to short code 22252 soon after the release of the results.

Things Nigerians Miss When They Travel Abroad

Nigerians sha like travel.

There is no country on this planet you won’t find a Nigerian especially our Igbo brothers.

Igbo Kwenu!

While many travel to search for greener pastures, others go abroad to school. Whatever your reason for “janding”, there are certain things about our area (home according to Sound Sultan) that you will miss:

The famous Naija brotherly Love

As much as we love minding our business, there is an intense of belonging here in Naija. We’re always ready to show some brotherly love to our fellow Nigerian. We even go as far as giving unsolicited advice. We care that much.

Screaming Up NEPA

While you may enjoy uninterrupted power supply abroad, you end up having nostalgic memories of screaming up nepa. I know you miss screaming it.

Traditional Food like Mama Used to Make

No matter how much Egusi or Ogbono is exported, Naija food outside Nigeria never tastes as good as the one made in Naija. Don’t even get me started on substituting spinach for waterleaf in Vegetable soup.

Owambe the Naija Way

You can throw an owambe abroad but it would never compare to the Aso-ebi wearing, money spraying, traditional music and Naija vibe of a real Owambe. Like Banky W said, “Ain’t no party like a Lagos Party.”

Proper Naija Street Food

Where will you find Boli, Okpa, Kilishi or Suya to buy on a street in the UK or USA? Just keep dreaming of the good street food.

Haggling at the Market

Haggling is a Nigerian way of life. You may like paying for stuff without haggling. But that gets old quickly. Haggling is an art form the average Nigerian practises with gusto.

Trivial Things Ghanaians Consider As Success

Success by dictionary definition means “accomplishment of an aim or purpose”.

In the real world, successful people are people who achieve a lot, beyond imagination. These people tend to defy all odds and acquire a lot of wealth by creating something the world wants.

But in Ghana, our definition of success is different, we tend to pay attention to petty things and term them as success. Here are some of those trivial things Ghanaians consider as success.

Traveling

Traveling anywhere outside the borders of Ghana is considered success regardless of the journey’s purpose. One is considered overly successful when they travel more than once in a year.

Travel cheap

Winning awards

Awards are meant to reward hard working folks, but not in Ghana, people actually buy awards and pretend they genuinely won it, this makes lots of hard working folks in the country go unrewarded.

Getting press

Just like the awards, many people will pay journalists, blogs and the media to write juicy stuff about them and purport it be a genuine publication. The includes getting interviewed on radio or TV.

BuzzGhana.com

International press

… talking about press, it’s even worse when any media house outside the country writes about a local, this will circulate all over, meanwhile these people are never even known in their own country or sometimes never even heard of.

Driving “big” cars

Owning a car in Ghana is a big deal, people who can afford more than one are considered successful even when they are living “high life on low funds”. It’s so much of a big deal that not owning the car and even sitting in one, usually expensive ones, mean success.

Social media following

Getting following, likes, verification or anything concerning numbers on social media is considered success, sometimes this becomes news and people with huge following on social media become celebrities without any special skill or talent.

Working at a prestigious firm that doesn’t pay

Ghanaians will work at the most prestigious fame and claim all the glory even if the salary is meagre. The mere fact that people see you in suit and tie 24/7 is deemed success.

Being at a fancy place

Being it a hotel, mansion, restaurant, the latest mall, fancy shop etc. so long as it’s overly expensive and you get to be there, you are successful, according to Ghanaians.

Having foreign friends

Overspending at any gathering

Buying expensive drinks at the bar/club or food at the restaurant is considered success.

From Ashaiman To Hollywood Set: Things You Didn’t Know About Abraham Attah

Abraham Attah has made Ghana proud by being the first Ghanaian actor to be at the Oscars.

But how well do we know him? Where he comes from, how he started and how far he’s come?

This and many questions we need to answer and so without further ado, here are 15 things you need to know about the new sensation in town, Abraham Attah.

1. He was born on June 15, 2001, that makes him 15 years in June this year.

2. He lives with the parents, the mother is a trader and the father works at the port. He’s not a street child as has been speculated earlier.

3. He has five other siblings.

4. He was picked off the streets of Ashaiman by the cast Director of the “Beasts Of No Nation”, Harrison Nesbit.

5. He’s a natural and according to the Director of the movie, he took charge of most of the directing by telling his young colleagues what to do in the movie. At one point, the Director said, he left the acting in the hands of the young lad who took control of most of the scenes. He also came up with some scenes that were not in the script according to the director, the part he wept when his sister was taken away, was actually not part of the script.

Image: Ariana Scolaro

Image: Ariana Scolaro

6. Beasts Of No Nation was his first ever film he starred in, he’s never acted in his life before.

7. He’s already been featured in 2 movies already besides Beasts Of No Nation, coming out soon in 2016. He is featured in Shane Carruth’s third movie “The Modern Ocean” and also on “Out Of The Village” a new movie.

8. He’s never been in a war before and has never experienced war in his life and do not even know how child soldiers felt like, unlike some of the casts in the film who were actually former child soldiers from Liberia. This what makes him a natural.

9. So far, he’s won 5 awards and was nominated for 7 awards.

10. He was actually discovered when he skipped class and went to play football with his friends. That is where the director found him and decided to use him in the movie.

“Attah was skipping class and playing soccer on a school field when casting director Harrison Nesbit walked over and asked him if he’d be interested in auditioning for a movie”.

Netflix

Netflix

11. He hesitated auditioning for the cast, he was actually pushed by his friends to go for it.

According to Harrison Nesbit,

“I saw that among the older kids was this young-looking guy, maybe 13 or 14. I asked him if he was interested in auditioning for a film. He said, ‘No, not really.’ I guess he was shy. But later, kids kind of pushed him to do it. And once he got on camera, he just started rapping and there was just this kind of a charm about him, and we invited him to come to a callback session.”

12. Besides acting he’s also good at Rapping which was mentioned by the Cast Director, Harrison Nesbit in one of his interviews. He showcased this in the movie by rapping some lines of Shatta Wale’s, “like my thing” song.

13. He is scared of snakes and also mentioned he was afraid acting beside Edris Elba because he made him look like an ant but beside that, he made it clear he was afraid of snakes.

14. His favorite scene in the movie was when he had to lead the team to enter a village to kill the villagers. He felt like the commandant in that scene. In an interview with times, he said,

“My favorite scene was [when] we were in the jungle, and I was in front of the audience, and behind me, we were going to kill the people who live in the village. So I was the commandant,”

15. The scene he hated most in the movie was the part he had to wear only shorts and slippers and he had to walk in the jungle without seeing the danger ahead of him, the danger here being his fear of snakes. In an interview with times he mentioned that,

“the scene I hate was when we were shooting in the jungle, and I was wearing shorts and slippers and Cary told me to pass through very deep bushes. And I was afraid to see any dangers that were in the bush.”

Abrahama Attah has been the talk of the week, thanks to his speech when he won best actor award at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Days after the teen actor received the award; three renowned radio presenters in Accra, Lexis Bill, MzGee and Jay Foley were accused of mocking the ‘Beasts Of No Nation’ actor for his speech delivered at the awards. This comment from the radio presenters, which happened on Joy FM and Live FM angered many Ghanaians who thought their action looked down on the 15-year-old boy. Disappointed Ghanaians took to social media networks to call out these radio personalities. After many Ghanaians expressed their complete disgust about their actions, Jay Foley, Lexis Bill and MzGee apologized to the actor and Ghanaians for their actions.

Abraham Attah after their apology also explained why he fumbled on the night after he received the award. OMGVoice.com approached some Ghanaians to take their thoughts on the incident, which has had many Ghanaians talking for days. Whilst some think the three radio presenters did not work professionally, others think we should cut them a slack.

Watch what some Ghanaians said about the Abraham Attah saga.

The Dagombas have a way of naming their children which is a bit similar to that of the Akans except Dagombas don’t have personal names due their Islam faith.

Most of their names are linked to Muslim names which are more of Hausa than Dagbani but they do have some personal names that have remained intact till date and these names are usually of royal descendant.

Any new-born Dagomba baby is referred to as sana [sana] “stranger”, or saando [saandoo] “male stranger”, if a male, or saanpaga [saanpaya] “female stranger” if a female. As will be seen, the elements “do” or “da” for “male” and “paga” for “female” occur very often in names in Dagbani.

5 Interesting Ways To Lose Your Phone In Nairobi

Every nice cosmopolitan capital has it’s perks and it’s dangers.

It’s no secret that Nairobi has it’s dangers especially when it comes to robbery. We are not surprised that it was labeled ‘Nairoberry’. Living in Nairobi means loving your new phone as much as you can since its lifetime is probably very short lived.

Here are possible ways you could lose your phone in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi:

1. While driving in your car

You’re scrolling through your Instagram double tapping here and there. There’s traffic, your window is down, next thing you see is a street urchin running with his ‘road kill’ of the day. As for you, well…you’re officially phone-less.

Lesson: While in traffic, always have your windows up and doors locked and if you have to pick up a call, use your earphones or put loudspeaker.

2. While using public transport (Matatus/buses)

Matatus are notorious! The person sited next to you could be world’s best petty thief and you would have no idea. There are many tricks that bus thieves use to steal phones:
• The thief pretends that it’s too hot and asks you to open the window and as you struggle to open the window, your bag is ransacked and it’s contents stolen.
• While using your phone, it’s grabbed by street thieves through the window.
•The bus is car jacked and the thieves ask for all important belongings such as money, wallets and phones.

Lesson: While using public transport, try as much as possible to keep your phone zipped up safely in your bag. Always avoid keeping your phone in your pockets if you have no bag. It’s safer to hold it.

3. On a night out

You’re busy dancing with this fine china that you think you’ll score after the night but next thing you know, your phone is missing! The dance floor is a perfect place to steal phones as the victim is so immersed in the euphoria of music and would barely notice someone grabbing a phone from his/her pocket.

Lesson: Stay vigilant and keep your phone safely zipped in your bag.

4. Misplacing it

You’re in a club, you visit the bathroom and place the phone on the water cistern or by the window and forget it there. By the time you realize that you left you left your phone, it has a new owner. Another scenario is leaving your phone at the bar counter and turning away perhaps to watch a match. By the time you’re looking back, lo! your phone is gone.

You can leave you phone anywhere;in a shopping cart at the supermarket, at the back seat of a taxi, in a matatu, name it…but truth of the matter is, recovering your phone is next to impossible.
Lesson: Don’t be careless.

5. Conmen tricks

There are many tricks that conmen in Nairobi use. The most common trick however is a scenario where a conman drops an envelope with a transparent part and you can clearly see that the envelope contains money. Most often you will see a KES 50 or KES 100 note. Once the envelope has been dropped near you, a guy will quickly come and tell you that you can ‘split the cash’. If you’re gullible enough, you will follow the conman most likely to a city council toilet and he will ask you to leave your phone with him and go in the washroom and split the cash.

To your surprise, the envelope has no cash but instead just plain papers and KES 50 note. By the time you realize that you have been duped, it’s too late and you’re phone-less!

Lesson: Never fall for conmen tricks. If a stranger stops you, the best option is to keep walking. Trust me!
